Game of the Week

The game of the week this week goes to Ishaan D (Lakeside School) and Sarang S (WIISER) for this short and sweet clash between two Pacific Northwest heavyweights.

After 11 moves we find ourselves in this position, with the game on totally equal footing:

White to move.

White’s next move Qd3 creates an opening for black, who seizes on the opportunity with Re8+ and never lets up on the attack for the rest of the game:

12. Qd3 Re8+

For those curious, the computer’s preferred move instead of Qd3 is f3. After black plays Re8+ the white king can flee to the newly vacated f2 square, and the game can continue on from with a perfectly even evaluation.

In the actual game, however, after white bishop blocks on e2, the black queen is free to capture on g2, and this is the beginning of the end for white:

13. Be2 Qxg2

After white repositions the rook to f1, black brings in the light square bishop to help with the attack. Note white’s pinned bishop on e2, which is unable to help defend f2:

14. Rf1 Bh3

Check out the full game below to see how the rest of this beautiful attack plays out!

Move of the Week

This one comes to us from a game between Ryan S (Pace Academy) and Finn B (The Study Academy) in the Tuesday Rook league. It’s black to move—can you find the winning continuation that was played by Finn in this game?

Black to move.

Did you spot the knight sacrifice on f2?

Nxf2

After the white queen recaptures on f2…

Qxf2

…black lands a check with the bishop on h2, sacrificing another piece, and unleashing a discovered attack from the rook on f8 to win the white queen. Well done!
