Green Dot League — Standings Update

Your weekly recap of league standings, plus a look at the Game of the Week.

Welcome to the Green Dot League newsletter! This is where we share updates on league standings, highlight some great moments from league matches, learn a thing or two from our coaches, and of course, share any news about Rookly.

Our next Rookly League is Wednesday, May 6, starting at 3:45 PM. Over the past few weeks the Rookly Green Dot League has begun in spectacular fashion. Dozens of students from each of Green Dot’s 16 campuses are competing in Rookly’s weekly chess league.

Rookly’s Green Dot League meets weekly, empowering students of all ages and skill levels to test out their chess skills. A few schools and students have separated themselves as particularly advanced, but the season is long.

Let’s look at the current standings. The standings page is public, so please feel free to share with parents, friends, or whoever you think might be interested!

Game of the Week

Eddy at Mae Jemison and and Cesar at Oscar de la Hoya are two students who caught our eye. They play thoughtful, tactical, patient chess, and in their game last week against one another all of these qualities were on display. The Rookly team was highly excited to watch their game, and it lived up to the hype!

This game saw Eddy (White) create an advantage in the early game before Cesar (Black) was able equalize things in the middlegame. This game actually had a 0.0 evaluation at move 20 and 21—perfectly even!

After a mistake from Eddy on move 24, Cesar took control and never let go. A series of effective piece exchanged left Cesar with a clear advantage in the endgame, and this one ended with the beautiful move f5# from black on move 43.

Check out this incredible game below!

Move of the Week

The move of the week this week comes courtesy of Leeum at Compton (White) who spotted this wonderful attack on Black’s back rank. After Ra8+, the only two legal moves for black blocking with the queen on b8, which leads to checkmate, or on d8, which gives up the queen on the next move.

Ra8+ wins the queen!

We are looking forward to an excellent week of chess this week and moving forward. Will Cesar and Eddy continue to dominate? Will one of them finally beat the other? Who will our new risers be? Tune in this week!
